In-display fingerprint scanners have become an integral part of modern flagships but unlike a lot of other phones in the market, Samsung’s Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10 come with Qualcomm’s ultrasonic sensors which are snappier and more reliable than their optical counterparts, present in devices like the OnePlus 6T.
However, since ultrasonic fingerprint scanners are a relatively newer technology, there are bound to be some problems when it comes to speed and reliability. This is the case with Samsung’s newly released phones too as some users have complained about their fingerprint scanner. The South Korean behemoth is aware of the problem and has pledged its full support to improve the situation.
Samsung Will Continue to Roll out Software Updates to Improve the In-Display Fingerprint Scanner’s Reliability
In-display fingerprint scanners will naturally take some getting used to. As far as Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10 Plus are concerned, there are conflicting reports with some people praising it for the convenience it provides and others saying they are encountering problems. Samsung recently released a firmware update for the phone which did improve the workings of the fingerprint scanner and the company also said that it will continue to issue more software updates to make it work even better.
It is worth noting that the fingerprint scanner may not work well if you are in a really dry environment or your finger has a scratch or a cut. The ultrasonic fingerprint scanner in the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10 Plus maps your fingerprint using inaudible sound waves and is more secure than other solutions. It even works when your fingers are damp or oily.
With time, Samsung wants to accumulate confidence from its loyal customer base that the fingerprint scanner improves in the future. While Samsung hasn’t explicitly said so, it is also possible that as time goes by, the fingerprint scanner learns user behavior and gets better over time, something which OnePlus 6T’s Screen Unlock feature does too. Either way, the in-display fingerprint scanner is a major selling point for the Galaxy S10 according to analysts.
In case you didn’t know, the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10 Plus are the two models that feature an in-screen fingerprint scanner. The Galaxy S10e, on the other hand, features a physical fingerprint on the side that is easier to locate than the rear-mounted version and offers a compelling solution from $749 in the U.S., if you want to avoid the in-display fingerprint scanner problem altogether.
