Realme U1 update brings bootloader unlocking functionality

Realme is an up and coming sub-brand from Oppo, one that focuses on releasing value-for-money devices. The Realme U1 was launched last year, with some modest specifications and an attractive price point. While the phone may not sport the best set of specifications or price tag, it does a good job in covering the needs of its target audience, and consumers surely appreciate the choice and diversity it brings to the segment.

One of the cons for Realme devices, especially if you care about 3rd-party community-based development, is that its devices come with bootloaders that could not be unlocked. The company did promise that this would change, and over the past few months, they have worked towards fulfilling this promise. The Realme 1 and the Realme 2 Pro now support bootloader unlocking, with the caveat that the method to unlock the bootloader is a little more complicated than the straightforward fastboot commands that most people are used to. Now, Realme is rolling out an update for the Realme U1 that is bringing over the ability to unlock the bootloader to the device.

Changelog for the build number RMX1831EX_11.A.07 is as follows:

  • System
    • Supported the function for unlocking bootloader
  • Security
    • Android Security Patch Level: March 5, 2019

The OTA for this update for the Realme U1 is rolling out in stages, pushed out initially for a small number of users. A broader rollout will follow if no critical bugs are reported. If you cannot wait, you can sideload the update yourself by downloading the 1.89GB update file from here and following the official update guide that utilizes the stock recovery.

Note that this update brings the ability to unlock the bootloader — it does not directly unlock your bootloader. Realme has not yet shared a guide to unlocking the device just yet, and it is said to be coming by the end of this month. We advice that users wait for the official guide to be released before attempting a bootloader unlock, lest some step be different and you end up with a bricked device.
