PlayStation 5, Xbox Scarlett To Release In 2020; Sony And Microsoft Are Aiming To Go Beyond The Stadia’s 10.7 Teraflops

PlayStation 5

Very little is currently known about the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Scarlett consoles, and it seems like there are some very good reasons for this, as they both won’t be released before next year.

In a ResetEra forums thread discussing the next generation of consoles, Kotaku’s Jason Schreier stated that the two new consoles from Sony and Microsoft will not release before 2020, so even if Microsoft does unveil the Xbox Scarlett at this year’s E3, we won’t see it on the market until next year.

Additionally, it seems like players aren’t the only ones who are being left in the dark, as very few developers know about the next generation consoles. Even big teams only have a rough idea of the specs.

Finally, it seems like both Sony and Microsoft don’t have any intention of being left behind by Google, as they are aiming to go beyond the 10.7 teraflops of the Google Stadia.

Look, as I’ve been saying since roughly March 2018 (in this very thread), next-gen is coming in 2020. That Semiaccurate article saying 2018 (lol) got people’s hopes up for 2019, but by now I hope it’s clear that the PS5 ain’t coming out this fall.

And, despite all the rumors about devkits being out (usually from rumormongers who are wrong more often than not), the number of people briefed on next-gen is still very limited. Even within companies like, say, DICE, there’ll be a small team of engineers who now have a rough idea of specs, and everyone else will know when they need to know. Not a lot of devs are disclosed on next-gen right now.

In other words, don’t expect much in the way of substantial leakage just yet. The only thing to know for sure is that both Sony and Microsoft are aiming higher than that “10.7 teraflops” number that Google threw out last week. (And, as has been reported, Microsoft’s got a few things in the works.)

As Sony is not attending the E3 this year, we are likely not going to hear more about the PlayStation 5 in two months. Microsoft will be present, however, and we may get some information about what to expect from the next generation. We will keep you updated on the new consoles as soon as more come in on it, so stay tuned for all the latest news.
