OnePlus 3/3T owners can apply for closed beta tests of the OxygenOS 9 update based on Android Pie

OnePlus ended the last year with a surprise for the OnePlus 5 & 5T users by dishing out the stable Android 9 Pie update for the two smartphones. The sweet treat during the holidays must have come as a rejoice to those who live by the tenet of “Never Settle.” But the update is not exclusive to the OnePlus 5/5T as devices from the previous year – OnePlus 3/3T – have also been promised to receive it. OnePlus is slowly moving towards fulfilling its promise by announcing the closed beta based on the Android 9 Pie update for OnePlus 3/3T units, first in China and now, globally.

Almost nine months after OnePlus promised to skip Android 8.1 Oreo update for the OnePlus 3/3T and jump straight to Android 9 Pie, we can see the first glimpse of the update. Shortly after announcing the HydrogenOS beta based on Android 9 Pie for the Chinese variants of the OnePlus 3 & 3T, OnePlus has confirmed a similar closed beta program for users in other regions.

You will be required to sign up for the closed beta to be eligible to test the latest OxygenOS 9 build suited for your OnePlus 3 or 3T. Moderators on the OnePlus forums warn that testers will have to flash new builds often and since this is a closed beta, we cannot expect the software experience to be very tasteful. You might also be required to completely wipe your device at multiple times during the test phase. Thus, if you volunteer to sign up, please ensure that you are not solely dependent on your OnePlus 3/3T and have a spare device for your daily needs.

OxygenOS 9 based on Android 9 Pie – Internal Beta Build

Furthermore, while the development secures the chances of OnePlus 3/3T receiving OxygenOS update based on Android 9 Pie sooner or later, there is no set timeline to it. It might be a few months until the Pie update actually starts rolling out to the two smartphones.

If you’re willing to try the update, enroll yourself in the closed beta before 2 pm (GMT) on March 23, 2019. After verification, you should hear from OnePlus about the directions on how to install the test build as well as report any bugs you encounter, the latter being the main objective of this closed beta.
