Latest Windows 10 Update Freezes Some Games – Microsoft Recommends Users to Just Uninstall It

Windows 10 update issues no longer surprise anyone. But things have been particularly bad for the Windows 10 October 2018 Update (version 1809). From the initial release issues to cumulative updates bringing more problems, version 1809 is probably the worst Windows 10 version released to the public since the introduction of Windows as a Service back in 2015.

One of the latest issues was brought in by KB4482887 (OS Build 17763.348) that was released on March 1. Several gamers reported performance problems affecting graphics and mouse performance after installing this cumulative update.

“This patch is causing massive lag spikes in older games, like CoD4 and CoD MW2,” one user complained (via AW). “Right after installing this update, I launch any of the two aforementioned games, moving the mouse around (yes, mouse movement) causes the game to freeze in one second intervals every time. If you don’t move the mouse, game appears fine.”

The problems are apparently worse for gamers playing older games like like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and CoD4: Modern Warfare. They don’t seem to affect the latest games. Another user wrote:

“I logged in to play some yesterday prior to Season of the Drifter starting this Tuesday and noticed my game was unusually sluggish. It also felt as though my mouse setting and sensitivity were messed up even though I had been comfortable with the settings I have for quite a long time now. At first I thought it may have been the latest NVIDIA driver so I reverted and tried each of the last 4 official versions, and the problem was still there. In addition to sensitivity feeling out of whack, my system was getting much less than 60 fps at 1080p which for a single RTX 2080 TI is a serious problem (and I have two in SLI).”

Microsoft acknowledges the issue and recommends uninstallation of this particular update

In an updated advisory, Microsoft acknowledged the issue, saying that “after installing KB4482887, users may notice graphics and mouse performance degradation with desktop gaming when playing certain games (eg: Destiny 2).”

The company said that it is working on a resolution and will provide an update in an upcoming release. “As a short-term resolution, users can uninstall KB4482887 to regain performance,” the Windows maker wrote.

It should be noted that this particular Windows 10 cumulative update enabled “Retpoline” to improve performance of Spectre v2 mitigations (CVE-2017-5715).
