Since the past few months, rumors had been flying around about new iPad models and today, Apple corroborated those reports itself with an official unveiling of the two tablets. Called the iPad Air and the iPad mini, both slates are similar in a lot of ways but their differences is what the customer will be looking for when making a purchase, so here’s everything you wanted to know when comparing both products.
Hardware
Both the new tablets are fueled by the A12 Bionic chip which also has a Neural Engine. Keep in mind that both the iPad Air and iPad mini are fueled by the same SoC that powers the 2018 iPhone lineup, making them exceptionally powerful than last year’s iPad 6, which features the A10 Fusion. It sure isn’t powerful than the A12X Bionic that fuels the 2018 iPad Pro lineup, but the A12 Bionic is faster than any tablet silicon in the market right now.
Display & Resolution
Both the newly announced iPad models sport the Advanced Retina Display, with the iPad Air featuring a 10.5-inch screen and a resolution of 2224 x 1668 (264PPI), while the iPad mini sports a 7.9-Inch display and a resolution of 2048 x 1536 (326PPI). Both slates support the P3 wide color display with True Tone technology, and both machines have a fully laminated panel. Since both tablets have wider bezels, they rely on Touch ID instead of the more convenient Face ID present on Apple’s 2018 iPad Pro line.
Camera
The new iPads have an 8MP back camera with an F/2.4 aperture and a 7MP FaceTime HD camera on the front. The new devices can also record 1080p HD videos. Apple says that the new cameras perform well in low-light environments, with slow-motion video support for 720p at 120FPS added.
Battery Timing (Estimations)
Apple claims that both the iPad Air and iPad mini can give the user up to 10 hours of battery life while surfing the web on Wi-Fi, watching video or listening to music. On cellular data, however, the battery life is reduced to 9 hours while performing the same activities.
Accessories Compatibility
Both the iPad Air and iPad mini are compatible with the first-generation Apple Pencil. However, only the iPad Air supports Apple’s Smart Keyboard accessory. If you really want to use a keyboard accessory with the iPad mini, do note that both this slate and the larger one are compatible with Bluetooth keyboards.
Pricing Differences
The iPad Air and iPad mini are both available in Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi + Cellular configurations. The 64GB and 256GB variant of the Wi-Fi iPad Air will cost you $499 and $649 respectively, while 64GB and 256GB models of the Wi-Fi + Cellular iPad Air will set you back $629 and $779, respectively. The Wi-Fi model of the iPad mini will cost you $399 for the 64GB variant and $549 for the 256GB version. The 64GB variant of the Wi-Fi + Cellular costs $529 while the 256GB model is priced at $679. Both the tablets are available in the colors Gold, Space Gray, and Silver.
