The much-awaited Android Q beta just got announced for all Pixel devices. It’s surprising to see the OG Pixel on the list, considering that it has already received two major software upgrades, but hey, we’re not complaining. If you’re a Pixel owner and want to try out Android Q, here is how you go about it. We’ll be sideloading this update via ADB, so make sure you have the necessary ADB components before you begin. You’ll also need to allow USB debugging via the developer options. Here’s how you enable it if you’re on Android Pie.
Step 1: Download the OTA file
You’ll first need to download the beta OTA file from the Android Q developer preview site. The OTA files are available here. Select the OTA corresponding to your device and download it. Keep the downloaded file at an easy-to-find location as you’ll need to input the path later.
Step 2: Boot into Recovery
To boot into recovery mode, switch off your handset and then hold down the Power button and the Volume down button together until you get to the Bootloader page. Using your volume buttons, scroll down to Recovery mode. Select this by clicking the power button. Here you should see an Android Logo lying down with an exclamation mark over it. Press the Power button and the Volume up button to enter Recovery mode.
Step 3: Navigate to ADB sideload
Scroll down to Apply update from ADB using the volume buttons and select it with the power button. This will launch a mostly blank screen with text near the bottom directing you on how to sideload an OTA, such as this one for the Android Q beta.
Step 4: Connect the device to a PC/Mac
Connect your device to a PC/Mac with ADB Tools installed in an accessible location. On Windows, press the Shift key plus right-click and select the “select open command prompt here” option in the ADB tools folder. To check if your PC/Mac is detecting your phone, type in “adb devices” and see if your phone shows up.
Now, type in adb sideload. If you’re on macOS or Linux, use “cd” and “ls” commands to make sure your Terminal is pointed at the ADB folder. Now, type in ./adb sideload. Lastly, insert the file name of the .zip folder you downloaded from Google and hit enter to start the process. You should see a dialogue on your computer and handset that shows the process of the sideload and installation process.
Step 5: Reboot your phone
Once the OTA is done installing, you will be taken back to Recovery Mode. The last step to jump into the new update is to select the Reboot now an option with your power button. It may take a bit longer for your device to boot, but that’s normal. You’ll now boot into Android, and should be running the latest version of the OS.
