Most people will agree that Google Home devices are generally smarter than Amazon Echo devices, but the “Hey Google” command is not as nice as “Alexa.” One way Google has tried to make the command less cumbersome is a feature called “Continued Conversations.” The feature has been available for a while, but now it’s rolling out to non-Google devices and smart displays as well.
Continued Conversations makes it so users don’t have to say the “Hey Google” command quite so much. Essentially, Google Home will keep listening for a short time after it’s done responding to a command. You’ll notice the listening lights remain on. This allows you to ask something else without having to say “Hey Google” again. The “conversation” can continue until you’re done giving commands. If you’re not conformable with Google continuing to listen after you’re done, you can disable the feature.
Previously, the feature was only available on Google Home speakers. Now, it also works on Smart Displays, like the Google Home Hub, and non-Google speakers, like the Insignia Smart Speaker. The screenshot above from our own Mishaal Rahman shows both devices (bedroom speaker and living room display) in the Continued Conversation settings. Open the Google Home app and go to Settings to enable or disable this feature.
