Yes, you read it right, we’re talking about a device receiving its Android Oreo update at a time when most users are waiting for a Pie update. Android Oreo first hit the airwaves in around November 2017, so calling it long overdue would be an understatement. Now, I don’t want to hate on Lenovorola, but they’re pretty bad when it comes to updating their devices. Having used the Moto G4 for a brief period, I can vouch for the fact that it is more than capable of running Android Oreo smoothly, but it never received its update until over a year after it was promised.
We got our first glimpse at Android Oreo on the Moto G4 via some builds that were leaked earlier this year. The leaks were presumed to be a part of a soak test, which usually happens before a major release. The release never happened until today, when some users in Brazil have reportedly received the much-awaited update on their Moto G4 and Moto G4 Plus.
The only silver lining in this fiasco is that Motorola never promised Oreo for the Moto G4; only the Moto G4 Plus was due to receive the update. The OPJ28.111-22 update bumps up the phone from Android 7 Nougat to Android 8.1 Oreo along with December 2018’s Android Security Patches. This will be the last major software upgrade for both devices, though.
Considering that the Moto G4 and G4 Plus were released in 2016, it is very likely that a lot of people who bought one may have moved on to newer devices. Both the Moto G5 and G6 were incrementally better, at best, and we don’t see the Moto G7 faring any better. Do note that the update has made its way only to some users in Brazil, so it may take a while for it to go international. If you’ve still held on to your Moto G4, expect to see a notification about it on your device soon.
