ZTE Axon 9 Pro is getting an Android Pie beta with MiFavor 9 in China

The ZTE Axon 9 Pro was launched at IFA in September 2018, aiming to be a successor to the legacy of the ZTE Axon 7. While the new device was an upgrade in terms of certain specifications, it lost out on various key features that made the Axon 7 worth the attention of its time. So while the Axon 9 Pro is technically an upgrade over its predecessor, it isn’t even a true “refresh” of what made the Axon 7 great.

The Axon 9 Pro was launched with Android 8.1 Oreo out-of-the-box. This build was close to stock Android, with just the addition of a customized camera and gallery app. The minimal flavor added to the OS made it seem that the device would receive an Android Pie update very quick, but even after these many months, the update did not arrive.

ZTE Axon 9 XDA Forum

ZTE is now inviting Axon 9 Pro users to participate in a beta program for Android 9 Pie with MiFavor 9 UI. Interested users who can install beta updates and provide feedback periodically are requested to register for the beta program. You do need to share your phone number, WeChat contact information, and IMEI of your device in the registration form to enable ZTE to reach out to you, so do keep that in mind. We would also recommend that only those users who are comfortable communicating in Chinese (natively, or through a translation service) should consider applying, as language can be a big barrier for effective communication.

While an update to Android Pie may not make the Axon 9 Pro a worthy successor to the Axon 7, it might just add enough functionality to redeem it as a competitive smartphone. Having the latest Android version on a device is a definite plus point in our list, and the sooner ZTE manages to release a stable version, the more goodwill and customers it will retain. We hope the stable Android Pie update receives a wide public rollout soon.
