Xiaomi confirms they’re working on another Black Shark gaming smartphone

Despite their increasing popularity, gaming smartphones continue to remain a niche segment of the mobile smartphone market. Compared to conventional “flagship” phones where the consumer has a plethora of choices, there are only a handful of options for gaming smartphones, like the Razer Phone and Razer Phone 2, Nubia Red Magic Mars, ASUS ROG Phone and the Xiaomi Black Shark.

Xiaomi has released two devices under the Black Shark series. The Xiaomi Black Shark was released in April 2018, while a mid-cycle refresh was made available in the form of the Xiaomi Black Shark Helo in October 2018. Now, Xiaomi has confirmed that a third Black Shark device is on the way.

Xiaomi’s Product Director Wang Teng Thomas shared a Weibo post wherein he mentioned that he recently saw the new Black Shark in action and said it is “too fast”. Xiaomi also asked fans to come up with new ideas and suggestions for the upcoming device, which is a bit curious since Mr. Thomas’s post implies that the product is already in prototype stages at least.

There is no further concrete info regarding the next generation of Xiaomi’s Black Shark lineup. Based on previous phones, one can expect the next Black Shark to sport a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 SoC. Since this would be a gaming smartphone with top-level specifications, we can also expect at least 8GB of RAM (the Black Shark Helo came in 6GB, 8GB and 10GB options). Other specifications should also be flagship level, meaning that we can expect at least an FHD+ display, plenty of storage and a phone design that aids in prolonged performance and efficient heat dissipation. If Xiaomi follows its previous release cycle, we can expect the device to be launched in April 2019. We hope the phone is made widely available in all key Xiaomi markets at a competitive price.
