Windows 10 has had quite an interesting (and controversial) journey so far. The desktop operating system had to deal with the dominance that Windows 7 experienced for years. Last month, after over 3 years, the latest and the first free version of Windows finally managed to overtake the numbers of Windows 7. As Microsoft gets ready to stop supporting Windows 7 next year, it is expected we will see businesses finally make the big move or risk being left unsupported.
Latest statistics published by Netmarketshare, however, reveal that both the Windows 7 and Windows 10 have experienced a rise in the last month. Windows 10 leads the market now with 40.90% market share, followed by Windows 7 at 37.19% and Windows 8.1 at 4.34%. This is a slight increase from last month’s numbers that showed Windows 10 at 39.22% and Windows 7 at 36.90%.
As always, it has to be noted that these numbers aren’t official or entirely accurate, but in the absence of official stats from Microsoft, they do offer us a look at how different desktop versions are being adopted. According to the analytics company, it collects “data from the browsers of site visitors to our exclusive on-demand network of analytics and social bookmarking products.”
“The data is compiled from approximately 100 million valid sessions per month, widely distributed over thousands of websites. The information published is an aggregation of the data from this network of hosted websites. In addition, we classify 430+ referral sources identified as search engines. Aggregate traffic referrals from these engines are summarized and reported monthly. The statistics for search engines include both organic and sponsored referrals.”
This data may have been collected from extensive sources, but it does leave a large chunk of enterprise machines that are never connected to the internet. While there are definitely more Windows 7 machines running, it is likely that many of them will finally be upgraded to Windows 10 or will run the risk of being exposed to security threats. However, the last few cumulative updates and the October 2018 Update made things worse since the update brought in numerous compatibility and data loss issues. Looking at these, some expect that the Windows maker will be pushed to extend the deadline of January 2020, since hundreds of millions of machines are still running Windows 7.
