Are you prepared for one of the best years that we’ve ever seen in Android’s short history? 2019 started off strong with the Honor View 20 and its punch hole display, but even mid-rangers have a lot to offer this year. Take the Vivo V15Pro that was just announced today. This smartphone is powered by the mid-range Qualcomm Snapdragon 675 (which technically makes it the first phone with this processor) rather than the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 mobile platform. Vivo’s choice in SoC betrays the fact that this smartphone is premium in most other important aspects. The Vivo V15Pro has a nearly bezel-less display thanks to what Vivo calls the “Elevating Front Camera,” a triple rear camera setup including a 48MP sensor, an in-display fingerprint scanner, a nearly bezel-less AMOLED display, Vivo’s Dual-Engine Fast Charging, and more.
Elevating Front Camera, Display, and Design
The Vivo V15Pro’s Elevating Front Camera uses the same underlying mechanism as the pop-up camera on the premium Vivo NEX, but the front-facing camera this time is a 32MP sensor. Vivo’s press release states the camera is “sturdy enough to withstand daily wear-and-tear,” though they didn’t offer any concrete lab tested numbers. Hopefully, the mechanism is indeed sturdy enough to last you through several years of ownership. We haven’t heard of any issues with the Vivo NEX’s mechanical pop-up camera, though.
Thanks to having no notch and slimming down the side and top bezels, the Vivo V15Pro packs a 6.39-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED display at a 91.64″ screen-to-body ratio. On the rear, you’ll see the V15Pro’s Topaz Blue or Coral Red back cover. On the side, Vivo’s “Smart Button” will launch Vivo’s assistant, Jovi, with a double press, or Google Assistant with a single press. Vivo says Jovi has been updated with an Image Recognizer feature to detect products and search e-commerce platforms for you. Vivo also says that the device has customized Google Assistant voice commands that let you activate AI Face Beauty, clear memory, search your album, and more.
Triple Rear Cameras
The V15Pro has a triple rear camera setup including a primary 48MP camera that uses Pixel Binning techniques to produce better 12MP shots in low-light conditions. The secondary and tertiary rear cameras include an 8MP wide-angle lens and 5MP depth-sensing lens. Like every other smartphone, the V15Pro has multiple camera modes to help you artificially take better shots in all kinds of conditions. There are AI Face Beauty, AI Portrait Framing, AI Super Night Mode, and AI Body Shaping features, for example.
SoC, RAM, and Storage
The smartphone is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 675 mobile platform. I recommend you read our announcement post which goes into more detail about the chipset, but here’s a graphic which summarizes its key features.
Accompanying the Snapdragon 675 is 6 or 8GB RAM and 128GB storage.
Biometrics, Charging, and Software
The V15Pro employs a fifth-generation optical in-display fingerprint scanner. According to Vivo’s competitor Xiaomi, fifth-generation sensors are 25% faster than fourth-generation sensors.
Vivo’s 22.5W Dual-Engine Fast Charging will charge the 3,700mAh battery fairly quickly. Dual-Engine Fast Charging debuted on the Vivo V11, and as its name implies, there are two charging chipsets at work here. Vivo says this charging solution is their “latest,” though we should note that Vivo’s first smartphone under its iQoo subbrand will have 44W fast charging.
Lastly, the V15Pro will run on Android 9 Pie-based Funtouch OS 9. We’re not the biggest fans of Funtouch OS, but we have to applaud Vivo for shipping the V15Pro with the latest Android platform version. We just hope the company is able to provide at least 2 years of major platform upgrades. Vivo says Funtouch 9 on the V15Pro comes with the upgraded Game Mode 5.0 feature, which has a “Competition Mode” to reallocate resources for better game performance and “Dual-Turbo” to reduce frame-drops by “300%.” I would take that figure with a heavy grain of salt, though.
