Vivo U1 launched in China with Qualcomm Snapdragon 439 SoC and 4,030mAh battery

Vivo doesn’t have a much of a presence in the budget smartphone market, but the company still continues to release budget phones. The company is primarily known offering upper mid-range phones which are released under the V-series brand. Last year, it also re-entered the flagship smartphone segment by launching the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845-powered Vivo NEX S and the Vivo NEX Dual Display. Now, the company has released a budget phone in China under a new U-series brand: the Vivo U1.

It turns out that the Vivo U1 shares most of its specifications with the Vivo Y95, which was launched in various markets (including India) back in November. (The only different specification is the front camera, which has seen its resolution be downgraded from 20MP to 8MP.)

In terms of specifications, the Vivo U1 is notable for offering a waterdrop notch and fairly thin bezels at an affordable price tag. The phone is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 439 SoC. The Snapdragon 439 is manufactured on a 12nm FinFET process, but in terms of performance, it offers few, if any, noteworthy upgrades over its predecessor. However, the Vivo U1 should get great battery life when taking into consideration its sizable 4,030mAh battery capacity. The phone’s full specifications are noted below:

The Vivo U1 has gone on sale starting today via the Vivo e-Shop in China. The entry-level 3GB RAM/32GB storage variant costs CNY 799 (₹8,430), while the 4GB RAM/32GB storage variant costs CNY 999 (₹10,539). The top-end 4GB RAM/64GB storage variant costs CNY 1,199 (₹12,649). It’s worth noting that Vivo had opted to launch only the 4GB RAM/64GB storage variant of the Vivo Y95 in India for a price tag of ₹15,990.

The Indian pricing for the Vivo Y95 didn’t make a lot of sense in a price-competitive market, but in the Chinese market, the entry-level variant of the Vivo U1 does have an okay value proposition. Vivo still faces an inherent disadvantage in terms of pricing when competing against the likes of Xiaomi and Honor. Time will tell if the company can figure out a way to overcome it.
