The Outer Worlds Release Date Pops Up on Steam and it’s Sooner Than You Might Think

Eager to get your hands on Obsidian Entertainment’s promising Fallout-esque RPG The Outer Worlds? You may be blasting off sooner than you think. So far, all Obsidian has officially said is that the game is coming sometime in 2019, which many took to mean “late 2019.” Well, it seems as though a mid-summer release may be in the cards.

Recently The Outer Worlds Steam page was updated to display an August 6 release date, along with information on language support and other details. The release date was quickly yanked, returning to a generic “2019,” indicating the August release date was either a) an error, or b) simply revealed too early. Obviously, take this all with a grain of salt, but I’m leaning toward the latter.

It would certainly make sense for Obsidian to aim for a summer release date for The Outer Worlds. The game looks great, but it’s still an indie game, and may struggle to compete with big name holiday releases. Besides, the summer is the perfect time to chill out with a big, complex RPG – I’m surprised more RPGs don’t release during the warm months.

Haven’t been keeping up with The Outer Worlds? Here are the game’s key features:

  • The player-driven story RPG: In keeping with the Obsidian tradition, how you approach The Outer Worlds is up to you. Your choices affect not only the way the story develops; but your character build, companion stories, and end game scenarios.
  • You can be flawed, in a good way: New to The Outer Worlds is the idea of flaws. A compelling hero is made by the flaws they carry with them. While playing The Outer Worlds, the game tracks your experience to find what you aren’t particularly good at. Keep getting attacked by Raptidons? Taking the Raptiphobia flaw gives you a debuff when confronting the vicious creatures, but rewards you with an additional character perk immediately. This optional approach to the game helps you build the character you want while exploring Halcyon.
  • Lead your companions: During your journey you will meet a host of characters who will want to join your crew. Armed with unique abilities, these companions all have their own missions, motivations, and ideals. It’s up to you to help them achieve their goals, or turn them to your own ends.
  • Explore the corporate colony: Halcyon is a colony at the edge of the galaxy owned and operated by a corporate board. They control everything… except for the alien monsters left behind when the terraforming of the colony’s two planets didn’t exactly go according to plan. Find your ship, build your crew, and explore the settlements, space stations, and other intriguing locations throughout Halcyon.

The Outer Worlds is coming to PC, Xbox One, and PS4. What do you think? Does the August release date seem plausible? Will you be picking up the game?
