The “Never Settle” motto never fails to bring up interesting questions when it comes to OnePlus devices. The company ignored NFC for years, refused to upgrade their displays to 1440p panels, and they even went back on their own words from the OnePlus 6 launch when they removed the 3.5mm headphone port from the OnePlus 6T. The company has yet to integrate wireless charging into their devices even though they have shifted away from metal build materials, and it looks like the OnePlus 7 will go without wireless charging as well.
A couple of years ago, the CEO of OnePlus made a post in their forums about their thoughts on wireless charging. To summarize the issue, the company said they felt Dash Charge (now known as Warp Charge) was just a better experience for their customers. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy the way they have implemented their wired charging technology, but leaving wireless charging out of the OnePlus 6 and OnePlus 6T (since they no longer have a metal back) always felt like they were settling.
To be fair, they aren’t charging $800+ for their phones, so I can understand them wanting to save as much money as possible. With OnePlus being under the arm of OPPO, news of them joining the Wireless Power Consortium gave people hope that the OnePlus 7 would finally come with wireless charging technology. We already know the OnePlus 7 will not be the company’s first 5G smartphone and now we also know that it won’t be their first device that comes with wireless charging either.
This information comes to us from CNET as they were able to get some information from OnePlus CEO Pete Lau at MWC. They are still going with the thought process that their wired charging technology is “one of the best” and that “wireless charging is far inferior.” The company may change their stance on the situation in the future (just as they did with the 3.5mm headphone port), but as of right now they are not planning it for the OnePlus 7.
