In the two years since the Nokia brand re-entered the market, we have seen HMD Global push out a man low-end and mid-range devices, but only a couple of flagships. None of these “premium” phones have been able to actually compete with the flagships from companies like Apple, Samsung, or Google. That is, however, expected to change soon with the upcoming Nokia 9 PureView, which has been in the news for over a year because of its interesting rear penta-camera setup.
We already know what the Nokia 9 will look like thanks to a promo leak at the end of 2018. Now, some of the specifications have been verified after the smartphone visited the FCC. The news of its FCC certification comes a day after the Nokia 9 was discovered through the Android Enterprise Recommended catalog and Google Play Developer Console.
First of all, the previously teased design of the Nokia 9’s back and its trypophobia-inducing penta-camera have been confirmed by the sketches submitted to the FCC. The image also confirms that the smartphone will be an Android One device. The “Nokia 9 PureView” branding has been confirmed as well.
Besides this information, the FCC certification informs us that the Nokia 9 PureView will be sold in three variants:
- A single SIM model (TA-1082) most likely to be limited to the US
- An Android One variant (TA-1087) with dual-SIM support
- Another dual-SIM variant (TA-1094) without Android One, exclusively for China.
The FCC certification also reveals connectivity options available in the Nokia 9. The smartphone will feature dual-band 802.11a/b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, LTE, NFC, and support for ANT+. Visibly, there’s no support for 5G, meaning that HMD is not buying into the hype yet.
Keeping the latest revelations aside, the previously leaked teaser suggested that the Nokia 9 PureView features a 5.99-inch 2K display with HDR10, an in-display fingerprint scanner, and 6GB of RAM (though there may be multiple RAM/storage variants) paired with a Snapdragon 845. Notably, an updated version with Snapdragon 855 and 5G support could come later this year.
The teaser also revealed one alleged purpose of the penta-camera, which is to take five pictures simultaneously and stitch them together for better lighting and a great amount of color vibrancy and detail. This will further be enhanced by computational photography tech from Light, the company which introduced us to a camera with 16 modules strewn across its back. We’ll get to learn more on February 24th, which is when HMD Global is holding a pre-MWC launch event in Barcelona.
