HMD Global’s arrival to the US came in the form of the rumored Nokia 2 V, before it was confirmed that the company intended on partnering with other US and Canadian carriers as well. The Nokia 2 V (a re-branded Nokia 2.1) is on its way to Verizon and Rogers, while Cricket Wireless launched their own variant of the Nokia 3.1 Plus. That’s a great start for HMD Global, but it gets even better, as the Nokia 5.1 Plus will soon be sold in the US through B&H at a starting price of $199.99.
For those unfamiliar, the Nokia 5.1 Plus features a 5.9-inch display with notch and 19:9 aspect ratio. It’s powered by the MediaTek Helio P60 and a 3,060mAh battery. Storage and RAM can get confusing, as there are three RAM and storage variants: 3GB/32GB, 4GB/64GB , nd 6GB/64GB. There are two cameras on the back: 13MP primary and 5MP depth-sensing. It was launched as part of the Android One program and was updated to Android Pie at the end of last year. The listing spotted on the B&H website is the white variant. Whether it will come to Canada or not in the future is unknown at this point in time.
This is a significant launch for a number of reasons, no less that it solidifies HMD Global’s entrance to the US market. Many still associate the Nokia brand with high-quality, durable products, so it’s expected for these devices to fare well. The name has helped the company’s growth hugely, ensuring that it outsold many of the company’s competitors. The company’s smartphones have typically supported US network bands anyway, but these are some of the first devices to be sold officially in the US. It’s expected to be available in 7-10 business days, putting the launch a little bit far away.
