Messenger for Android Can Now Remove Sent Messages

We all have things that we regret online, but the ability to edit or remove something you posted isn’t as common as it should be. The tech community is largely divided on the issue, and Instant messaging apps, in particular, do not let users delete or modify their texts. While WhatsApp and Telegram both allow users to delete messages, the ability to edit them is only present in the latter. Whatsapp claims that it is impossible to edit messages owing to their use of E2E encryption. The ability to delete messages from everyone is time-bound across both apps.

Today, Facebook Messenger is letting users delete messages from a conversation after you’ve sent them. The company has officially announced that the feature is now rolling out to users who are using the latest version of the app in iOS and Android. You even get the option to delete the message for everyone, just like in WhatsApp.

The message has to be done within 10 minutes of the message after being sent, which is more than enough to correct immediate mistakes. You can, however, try your luck at deleting older messages by changing your phone’s time to an earlier date after switching on Airplane mode and clearing the app data. The bug was initially discovered in WhatsApp and will very likely find its way to Messenger.

Facebook released a statement saying this was a feature that was in the works for a long time. However, it is worth noting that the company was vehemently against adding the feature for a long time. Facebook’s stance may have changed after they were caught removing messages from Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook Messenger in an attempt to cover up evidence of scraping call logs and message data. The company even announced that they would limit Zuckerberg’s ability to use the delete option until everyone else could.
