LG’s smartphone business has been going through tough times. After reporting a loss for the last 15 months, the company is now looking to bounce back from its troubles by jumping on the 5G bandwagon. After the leak of its first 5G smartphone – LG V50 ThinQ, LG has officially announced that the device will be showcased at Mobile World Congress 2019 and launched in a month or two from now.
LG has two separate lineups for its flagships – the G-Series and the V-Series. While the G-Series devices are usually launched during the first half of the year, the V-Series is reserved for the second half (the LG V40 ThinQ was announced in October last year). However, LG will now be revealing the new devices from both the series at the same time.
At a press conference in Seoul, LG’s president and the head of its mobile and TV business, Kwon Bong-seok, said that the company will be unveiling LG V50 ThinQ and the LG G8 ThinQ smartphones simultaneously at MWC 2019.

Bong-seok elaborated that the LG V50 ThinQ will be launched “between March and April” with support for 5G connectivity. The LG G8 ThinQ, on the other hand, will be a “premium LTE smartphone.” The executive, however, did not confirm leaks about the potential partnership with Sprint in the U.S. for the launch of its first 5G smartphone.
LG has been pegging all hopes on 5G for its revival as well as the growth of its smartphone business. Since MWC 2019 will be the hotbed for 5G innovation, the company does not want to wait until the later this year to launch the LG V50 ThinQ and be left behind the competitors.
LG’s president also responded to questions about foldable phones and said that it is “too early for LG” to release foldable smartphones. However, he added that the electronics giant is fully prepared to take on the demands of the consumers when it is the best time for foldable smartphones. LG, which showcased a rollable 4K OLED TV at CES 2019, said that it contemplated releasing a foldable phone alongside its first 5G device, “but decided not to produce it.”
LG, in the words of the mobile business chief, is currently focussing on regaining its market position. Perhaps, it is better than sailing two boats.
