The LG G8 ThinQ is slated to be LG’s first flagship of 2019. While we are still a few days away from the official launch of the device at MWC 2019, the look and design of the device alongside most key specifications have already been leaked by us. In our leak, we did spot additional sensors being present alongside the front camera, which we predicted were likely for Face ID-like functionality. Now, LG has gone ahead and officially confirmed the existence of the front-facing Time of Flight (ToF) sensor on the LG G8 ThinQ.
The LG G8 ThinQ will sport a Time-of-Flight sensor made by Infineon Technologies AG. The Infineon REAL3 image sensor will “deliver a new level of front camera capability in a smartphone“. ToF sensors work by capturing infrared light which is reflected off a subject, allowing them to be efficient, accurate, and unaffected by light from external sources. ToF sensors also see objects in 3D, making them ideal for use for biometric authentication such as face recognition, as well as to deliver accurate background blur and portrait shots.
Including ToF technology in the LG G8 ThinQ gives LG a talking point that other OEMs have not been able to exploit, with certain exceptions such as the Honor View 20. The Honor View 20 has a ToF sensor on the back of the device, though, which renders it difficult to use for face recognition and limits its usage to portrait mode photos and some (impressive but gimmicky) 3D motion controlled gaming. Android Q is also poised to have native support for Face ID-like features.
LG needs to release a very competitive smartphone if it plans to compete against the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S10 lineup. Samsung is ensuring that all eyes are on the 10th generation of the Samsung Galaxy S-series flagship, and LG and others may find themselves on the sidelines at MWC 2019 if they do not pack enough of a punch. For the end consumer though, it is going to be an exciting February.
