When you think about mobile web browsers, you probably think of Google Chrome or whatever comes default on your device. After all, why should I go much further than that if I simply want to browse the internet without issues or hiccups? Added to this is the fact that a majority of third-party mobile browsers also use Chromium’s rendering engine or straight up use Chromium as a base, meaning that the differences between browsers are, most of the time, pretty minimal. But “most of the time” is the key phrase here. There is still a number of third-party browsers that are still able to make a case for themselves, even if they’re Chromium-based. One such example is Kiwi Browser.
We’ve talked about Kiwi Browser a couple of times in the past, but for those out of the loop, it is pretty much a Chromium-based browser which includes features such as a built-in ad blocker, a dark theme, as well as several performance improvements. Things that, overall, add up to improve user experience by leaps and bounds. Kiwi Browser is also updated constantly, and the latest updates bring a couple of new features.
First of all, Kiwi Browser now integrates Edge History Swipe, a feature found in Google Chrome Canary (and Chromium) builds. This feature allows users to go back and forward on a website by swiping from the left/right edges of the screen and may turn out to be a game changer for power users.
And more interestingly, Kiwi Browser also includes some additional optimizations, and the developers claim that it has 10% faster Javascript performance over Chrome. We haven’t been able to put this to the test yet, but if true, it should translate to nice improvements during real-life daily usage. Other new features since the last time we covered this app include an improved dark mode as well as customizable home tiles which allow you to pin any website of your choice.
