India produces 1.5 million engineering graduates each year but only 6% of the lot are actually employable. The real problem lies in substandard education and antiquated teaching techniques, which leaves graduating students with an engineering degree but only a few usable skills. To remedy this, India’s second largest IT firm, Infosys, has launched a learning app for engineering students.
InfyTQ, the platform developed by Infosys, focuses on helping engineering students with not just technical education but also the development of their soft skills. The platform hosts courses which are suitable for conceptual as well as practical understanding of technology with an objective to help students be ready for the practical challenges of the industry when they graduate.
Currently, InfyTQ offers free courses for students in the third and fourth years of their engineering degrees. It will be expanded in the future to “offer advance learning materials and enable virtual programming environments,” the official statement reads.
InfyTQ is available as an Android app as well as in a desktop version. Besides courses and related study material, the platform also has a social feed which lets learners stay up to date with innovations and other events at various Infosys campuses and centers. Apart from sharing technical know-how, the app is also designed to help students get better at formal and informal communication, interpersonal relations, and even etiquettes.
In just two days since the launch, the learning app from Infosys has already garnered over 10,000 downloads. However, the top reviews on the app highlight that InfyTQ is buggy and seems to have an incomplete interface. Many users complain about having issues with creating new accounts while others point out that the experience is not even as good as a mobile webpage.
During my initial experience too, the app has been dreadfully slow and intermittently unresponsive. The login API does not feel very secure, either. I used my Google account to create sign up for the app and received a security alert notifying me that I logged into my account using a Google Nexus S. This is disheartening, especially coming from a multi-national IT company.
