What you see above is a prototype of the Huawei P30 Pro, the highest-end device in Huawei’s first flagship smartphone lineup of 2019. DigitalTrends says Huawei gave them access to a “non-operational prototype” that was described to them as “almost completely final.” This bit of news almost slipped under our radar thanks to the craziness of Mobile World Congress, but given that it’s our first look at the device besides sketchy case renders, we thought it was worth bringing to your attention.
Like the Huawei P20 Pro, the Huawei P30 Pro has triple rear cameras. Unlike the P20 Pro, however, the Huawei P30 Pro’s three lenses are said to be the same size and integrated into a single unit rather than a single lens situated separately outside the two-lens camera bump.

DigitalTrends says the prototype has a “highly reflective chrome finish” that was “covered in fingerprints” and “heavily scratched,” suggesting that the back design hasn’t been finalized. They report that the device is around the same size as the Huawei P20 Pro but has the tapered edges of the Huawei Mate 20 Pro for comfort when held in the hands. DigitalTrends also says the prototype P30 Pro weighs about the same as the P20 Pro.
The volume keys and power button are situated on the right side of the prototype. The USB Type-C port is on the bottom, the SIM card tray is on top, and there’s no 3.5mm headphone jack like on the P20 Pro. DigitalTrends wasn’t allowed to show off the front of the device since the design wasn’t complete. We don’t know if the Huawei P30 Pro will have a waterdrop notch design like the alleged Huawei P30 or Huawei Mate 20, or if it’ll have a larger notch like the Huawei Mate 20 Pro or Huawei P20 Pro.

If you’re questioning why the first image on the top left says “Vogue” and “Link” on the back rather than “Huawei” and “Leica,” it’s because Huawei brands its prototype devices using internal code-names to limit leaks. Early images of the Huawei P20 Lite showed a device bearing the name “Shirley,” although the device’s actual code-name is “Anne.” Yes, Huawei uses code-names for their code-names—I’ve dealt with that before in my firmware teardowns of their unreleased devices.
Speaking of firmware, I can confirm that VOGUE is the code-name for a Huawei flagship smartphone with the HiSilicon Kirin 980. Analysis of early, incomplete firmware for VOG-AL00, the presumed Chinese version of the Huawei P30 Pro, suggests that the device has a 3,650mAh battery. Regarding its camera array, two of its three rear cameras could be the 40MP Sony IMX 600 and 16MP Sony IMX 351, while its front-facing camera could be the 25MP Sony IMX 576. Again, this is information I’ve obtained from older firmware builds, which has very likely been updated during the months of development after I obtained the firmware.
Huawei is also rumored to include better optical zooming capabilities on the new P30 series. The Huawei P30, according to Evan Blass, will offer 5X lossless zoom. My own source who provided us reliable information on the camera hardware and design of the Honor View 20 well ahead of its launch claimed that the P30 Pro will offer 10X zoom. We were told this information back in December and can’t corroborate this information with VOG’s firmware. However, Walter Ji, President of Huawei Europe, told AndroidPit in an interview that the company was researching providing 10x zoom for smartphones in 2019. If Huawei’s zoom technology is anything like what we’ve seen from OPPO this week, then count me in.
The Huawei P30 and Huawei P30 Pro will be announced on March 26th at an event in Paris. We’ll update you if we learn any new details about the P30 Pro ahead of its launch date.
