Here’s a complete tutorial on how to enter Recovery Mode on the new 2018 iPad Pro (both 11-inch and 12.9-inch models).
Recovery Mode has existed on iOS devices since forever. It’s a great way to troubleshoot issues with the firmware, allowing you to restore your device and hopefully get everything back to normal. It’s the perfect way to update a device that is refusing to play nicely with you.
But with the latest iPads, things have changed a little. See, the Home button is missing, meaning that you can’t use the previous method of entering Recovery Mode on the fly.
In today’s tutorial, we’ll get you up to speed on how to enter Recovery Mode on the latest 2018 iPad Pro tablets.
If you have an older device with a Home button, check out the tutorials linked at the foot of this post on how to enter or exit Recovery Mode or DFU mode.
How to Enter Recovery Mode
- Connect your iPad Pro 2018 tablet to your PC or Mac using a USB-C to USB-C cable.
- Launch iTunes and make sure that your tablet is detected.
- Press and release the Volume Up button.
- Now press and release the Volume Down button.
- Press and hold the Power button until you see the iTunes logo on the tablet’s display.
How to Exit Recovery Mode
For this to work, please disconnect your iPad Pro from your PC or Mac and follow the steps outlined below:
- Press and release the Volume Up button.
- Press and release the Volume Down button.
- Press and hold the Power button until you see the Apple logo on your iPad’s display.
Your 2018 iPad Pro will boot back up in a few seconds after it has exited Recovery Mode. You can use it as you normally would.
It’s great to see that Apple has baked in Recovery Mode in the latest generation of iPads. But it would be nicer to see if Apple gets rid of this feature as well in order to make room for macOS like restores that happen absolutely over the air, negating the need to connect your device to iTunes in order to make things right.
Maybe that’s an argument for some other day.
