Honor View 20’s first update brings 48MP AI Ultra Clarity and January security patches

Last year brought out so many different smartphones. Instead of blatantly ripping off the iPhone X’s notch, several manufacturers attempted to come up with unique ways of getting the most out of the front side of the device. Honor was one of the first OEMs to use the hole-punch display to minimize the size taken up by the front camera. The Honor View 20 features a 6.4-inch IPS LCD display at 2310×1080 resolution, with 4.5mm display hole at the top-left corner for the camera. The device turned a lot of heads, as its specifications are no slouch. It rocks the first 7nm SoC, Kirin 980, 6 or 8 GB of RAM, and up to 256GB of internal storage.

On the back, you’ll see two camera lenses, which can take photos up to 48MP. Honor announced AI Ultra Clarity mode with the release of the phone. Basically, what it does is that it takes several 48MP pictures in a 5-second interval, then processes all of the images and creates a single, very sharp, and clear 48MP photo. You can take photos in the same resolution without using the AI Ultra Clarity, but this feature makes them much clearer. Honor disclosed the feature some time ago, but it wasn’t available until today.

XDA Recognized Contributor miststudent2011 published a thread on our forums informing users about the OTA update on the phone. The update enables the AI Ultra Clarity mode on the Honor View 20. More importantly for me, it adds January 2019 security patches. You can see the full changelog below:

  • Adds 48MP AI Ultra Clarity Features to Camera
  • Themes Updates
  • Improves System Performance and Stability
  • Security Patch – January 2019

The update bumps the skin version to Magic 2.0.1 and build number to 9.0.1.128. The OTA package is about 342MB in size. There is a chance that Honor is releasing this update in batches, so you may have to wait a bit if you didn’t receive the update just yet. You can go to System Updates and check for it just to make sure.

Note: Huawei has stopped providing official bootloader unlock codes for its devices. Therefore, the bootloader of the Honor View 20 can’t be unlocked, which means that users cannot root or install custom ROMs.
