Xiaomi Redmi Y2 and Redmi 6 Pro get a price cut up to ₹3,000/1,000 respectively

The price drop season for smartphones is well under way in India. Mobile World Congress is coming next month, and it will bring along many new smartphones. As a form of tacit acknowledgment, device makers are reducing the prices of some of their 2018 phones. The reasons for this are simple: they want to clear inventory before launching new products. Either way, consumers benefit due to this. Earlier this week, Xiaomi cut the prices of the Xiaomi Mi A2 by up to ₹3,000 and the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro by up to ₹4,000. Now, India’s largest smartphone brand has cut the prices of the Xiaomi Redmi Y2 and the Xiaomi Redmi 6 Pro by up to ₹3,000 and ₹1,000 respectively.

The Redmi Y2 and the Redmi 6 Pro are both Qualcomm Snapdragon 625-powered budget phones. The Redmi Y2 was released in India in June, whereas the Redmi 6 Pro made its way to India in September.

The Redmi Y2’s list of specifications includes the Qualcomm Snapdagon 625 SoC, 3GB/4GB of RAM with 32GB/64GB storage, 5.99-inch HD+ (1480×720) IPS LCD, dual rear 12MP + 5MP (depth sensor) cameras, 20MP front-facing camera, and a 3,080mAh battery. Before today’s price cut, the phone was being sold in India for ₹10,499 for the 3GB RAM/32GB storage variant, and for ₹13,999 for the 4GB RAM/64GB storage variant. (These prices are higher than the phone’s launch prices because Xiaomi hiked up the prices of several phones in November.)

Now, the Redmi Y2’s 3GB RAM variant will be sold for ₹8,999, while the 4GB RAM variant will be sold for ₹10,999. The 3GB RAM variant, therefore, has received a price cut of ₹1,500, while the 4GB RAM variant has seen its price slashed off by ₹3,000.

The Redmi 6 Pro is a compact phone with a display notch. Its list of specifications includes the Snapdragon 625, 3GB/4GB of RAM with 32GB/64GB storage, 5.84-inch Full HD+ (2280×1080) 19:9 IPS LCD, dual rear 12MP + 5MP (depth sensor) rear cameras, 5MP front-facing camera, and a 4,000mAh battery. Until the price cut, the 3GB RAM and 4GB RAM variants were being sold in India for ₹11,499 and ₹13,499 respectively.

Now, the Redmi 6 Pro’s 3GB RAM/32GB storage variant will be sold for ₹9,999, while the 4GB RAM/64GB storage variant will be sold for ₹11,999. Thus, both variants have seen price cuts of ₹1,500 each.

Even with the price cuts, the Redmi Y2 and the Redmi 6 Pro are not notable in Xiaomi’s device portfolio for providing excellent value. Competitors such as the Asus ZenFone Max Pro M1, Asus ZenFone Max M2, Realme U1, and the Honor 8C generally provide better specifications in this price range, while Xiaomi’s own more capable Redmi Note 5 Pro is now sold for ₹12,999. We hope that the next generation Redmi phones herald Xiaomi’s return to its position as the benchmark of the value segment.
