Warframe Cross-Platform Play May Not Be Doable, Progress Sharing Discussed

Now that Sony has opened the doors for cross-platform play, developers are getting asked about introducing it to already released games. Fortnite and Rocket League allow players to enjoy the game with those on other platforms, but it seems like Warframe will not be among them anytime soon.

During a recent Warframe livestream with the developers, creative director Steve Sinclair stated that introducing crossplay to Warframe would be one of the highest-risk things the developer could do. The game has been released a while back, and so agreements with console manufacturers are much different from the ones made today, and the game currently lacks parity between the different versions, which is something that cannot be achieved easily.

As a developer, it’s one of the highest-risk things we can do. Because a lot of the games that are doing it—it’s still very early days for this—A lot of those games came late to the platforms and had different negotiating environments to establish their contracts. On top of that, we are a game that is constantly changing. We change the game modes, we change the gameplay. We do huge, huge swings constantly, so, it is something that we’re all interested in and we do discuss it.

While cross-platform play may not be feasible, cross-platform progress may be. It wouldn’t be an overnight switch, but it sounds like it’s more than doable.

Those things are a lot more doable than getting everything in sync and doing complete cross-play. Maybe it’s more of a gradual step for us than an overnight switch.

Warframe is now available on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch in all regions.
