While the Motorola Moto G7 series is just around the corner, Motorola has not forgotten the Moto G6 when it comes to updates (which is surprising because Lenovo hasn’t been the best when it comes to updating older phones). As it appears, the Motorola Moto G6 is getting an Android Pie soak test.
A user on the Moto G6 Telegram group posted an image of an available system update for the device. The update comes with the version number PPS29.55-10. The stated highlight of this update includes “bug fixes and stability improvements” as well as an update to the Android security version of the device to January 1, 2019. The system update changelog also mentions that Google Pay does not work in this update, and users expecting Google Pay functionality should wait for a few days before installing the update, as Motorola is still working on making this functionality available on this update. The changelog also mentions that “Motorola has made changes related to future security updates on your device”, though we are unsure what exactly this is referring to.
What the changelog does not mention is the update to Android Pie, as that is the prime focus of the soak test. Motorola runs its soak test in Brazil before rolling out the update in all regions, so this is not something out of the ordinary. If the feedback from the soak test mentions no major bugs, the update will begin its roll out to other regions.
Earlier, an Android Pie soak test beta for the Moto G6 with build number PPS29.44 had also leaked online, which apparently ran better than the earlier Android Oreo update according to users who had installed the leaked build. The Moto G6 Plus also began receiving its stable Android Pie update yesterday, so we did see this coming.

Right after we heard reports that the regular Moto G6 is getting an Android Pie beta in Brazil, we got a tip from an XDA forum member that the Moto G6 Play is also getting a soak test. As is the norm, this soak test seems to be limited to a small number of users in Brazil, one of Motorola’s key markets. The build number is PPP29.55-10 and comes with the January 2019 security patches. We might see the G6 and G6 Play’s Pie soak test become available at a later date in other markets like Mexico and India. We’ll let you know if the soak test availability expands, if a build leaks online, or if the stable update becomes available.
