The popular keyboard application for Android, SwiftKey, has over 100 million users. After it was acquired by Microsoft, we can’t say that we were surprised when we first learned that they were going to bring it to Windows 10 and use Bing for search. Fortunately, the development hasn’t been ceased or degraded a bit after the acquisition. To this day, SwiftKey still gets more and more features regularly. Just now, the company revealed their progress of reducing lags in the application. According to them, SwiftKey has managed to decrease lags by 50% over the past year.
Here are three main points to take from the announcement:
- SwiftKey is on average 20% faster loading than their “closest competitor” across a range of devices, and as much as twice as fast on the first load after a phone restart.
- SwiftKey has the smallest app install size on a fresh install – without sacrificing features or functionality – on some devices, this is as much as half the size.
- Internal testing shows improved frame rendering, reducing lag by over 50%, even on older phones.
SwiftKey believes that technology should keep pace with the owner of the technology, in any case. That was the key idea behind these maintenance improvements. They have also explained how their developers test the application. The process includes keeping the control of the application size, monitoring the raw performance on loads of devices, and benchmarking the speeds against the competitors (other keyboard apps). We reached out to SwiftKey and they confirmed that all of these performance and reliability updates are already included in the application. You can download the app from the Play Store listing below. While we’re at it, you can let us in the comments which keyboard do you use and why.
