Samsung Galaxy M series launching first in India on 28th Jan, priced at up to ₹20,000

Update: Teaser page for the upcoming Galaxy M series is now live on Amazon.in.

It is no secret that Samsung has been leaking market share, namely in the entry level and early mid-range segments, to Chinese OEMs like Xiaomi, OPPO and Vivo. Samsung’s low-end offerings have lagged behind on the value-for-money factor, relying mainly on the brand goodwill of Samsung as well as its after-sales support to attract customers.

Past reports have mentioned that Samsung does indeed plan to remedy the situation. The company plans to eliminate the Galaxy J branding by integrating the series into the Galaxy A lineup. Samsung had also planned to replace the Galaxy ON branding with the new Galaxy M branding, with a renewed focus on competing against the influx of Chinese smartphones in the low-end and early-mid range.

A new report from Reuters mentions that the new Galaxy M budget smartphone series will be launched first in India by the end of January 2019, before its global release. The three new M-series phones will be sold by Samsung only through its website as well as through Amazon.in. The phones would be priced for less than ₹10,000 (~$140), going up to ₹20,000 (~$280), and carry big batteries with quick charging support.

Other reports have indicated that the Samsung Galaxy M10 will sport a 6.02″ display diagonal and dimensions of 155.7 mm x 75.8 mm. The device will likely have 3GB of RAM and could come in 16GB and 32GB internal storage options. The battery is expected to be around 3,400 mAh.

Similarly, the Galaxy M20 will sport a 6.13″ display with a water drop notch design, with device dimensions of 156.4 mm x 74.5 mm x 8.8 mm. The device is expected to come with an Exynos 7885 SoC, 3GB of RAM and storage options of 32GB or 64GB. The phone will also have a chunky 5,000 mAh battery. Both the devices will also come with a USB Type-C port and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Samsung India’s renewed approach to the low-end and early mid range should keep the competition on its toes, even if it does not end up making a dent in their sales. It remains to be seen how competitively Samsung prices this new lineup, and how the competition responds.

Update: Teaser page for the upcoming Samsung Galaxy M-series is now live on Amazon.in. The new series will launch on January 28, 2019. The teaser images confirm that the devices will sport a water drop notch design, USB Type-C, quick charging, headphone jack, and a dual rear camera setup with an ultra-wide shooter.
