Resident Evil 2 Sharpest on Xbox One X, Base Consoles Suffer from Inconsistent Framerate

Resident Evil 2 finally hits store shelves today, and I can confirm that it’s a very nice-looking game, at least from an artistic standpoint. But how does the game hold up on a technical level? Well, the dedicated pixel counters at Digital Foundry have taken the game for a spin on all the available consoles, and the results are a somewhat mixed bag. Check out the full analysis, below.

First, resolution – Resident Evil 2 runs at 1080p on both the base PS4 and Xbox One S, which is better than you see with a lot of games, although the Xbox version has a somewhat blurrier look. The Digital Foundry guys speculate the S version is suffering from an imperfect uprez solution/reconstruction filter. Meanwhile, both the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X versions run at 1680p, although in this case the Xbox version is slightly cleaner, as the PS4 Pro has some slight anti-aliasing and specular shimmer issues.

In terms of performance, both the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X maintain a mostly-consistent 60fps, although the PS4 Pro dips into the mid-50s a bit more frequently. The base PS4 most hovers in the mid-40 to mid-50fps range, while the Xbox One S is more inconsistent, suffering drops into the low 30s. That said, performance shouldn’t be a deal-breaker with Resident Evil 2, as it’s a relatively slow-paced game that doesn’t require a lot of twitch action.

I recently reviewed Resident Evil 2, finding it to be a polished, smart remake, that perhaps could have been a touch more ambitious

“Resident Evil 2 is a polished, respectful remake of a survival horror classic that probably would have benefitted from a slightly more daring approach. Hints of a braver revamp are sprinkled throughout, but it doesn’t take the risks necessary to join the canon of truly great video game remakes. Make no mistake though, if you loved the original Resident Evil 2, you’ll likely love the remake, and new players who can tolerate a few old-school quirks ought to have a gruesome good time as well.”

Resident Evil 2 available as of today on PC, Xbox One, and PS4.
