Sony Santa Monica’s Cory Barlog recently appeared as the special guest on The GameOverGreggy Show, Episode 265, where he discussed the development of God of War at length.
He also revealed to have had a ‘really fun’ idea for a God of War DLC. Unfortunately, as we all know this idea was scrapped and there will be no God of War DLC. Apparently, that’s because the concept was too large.
I had a really fun idea for a DLC. I would love to have done that, but it was too ambitious. It was like The Last of Us: Left Behind, it was like Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, it would end up being its own thing. Rightfully so, everybody had said to me, ‘Dude, this is crazy. This isn’t DLC, it’s a little too big.
But I still feel really good about the idea that what we released is everything. The only thing that irked me was not having photo mode and New Game Plus on the original release, but it was a choice between cutting them forever or just releasing them shortly after as free content, so… I would have loved to have made all that stuff but that balance between ‘here’s all the bugs you need to fix’ and ‘here’s what we need to do here’. I could take all those people and we could fix all those bugs, we just wouldn’t get those things.
I’ll get the most stable game, always. Even though there are patches, the most stable you can get it immediately, the better. That’s a point of pride for me as well as our entire studio, releasing something that we feel is the most stable that we can get it.
God of War took the top prize, the Game of the Year, at the recent The Game Awards 2018. The ‘battle’ of the awards is just beginning, though, with the next stop being the GDC 2019 Choice Awards where Red Dead Redemption 2 got seven nominations and God of War (as well as Marvel’s Spider-Man) got six. Still, as great as it was, we’d have loved to play a God of War DLC, particularly because Barlog’s examples – The Last of Us: Left Behind and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy – were both as great as the main games.
Are you disappointed by the lack of DLC for God of War?
