Last year, Google announced the ADT-2 Android TV development platform with Android Pie. Developers could sign up to receive the device for development, but this was way back in May. Google didn’t share any news about the program for many months. Finally, in November, they said the platform would begin shipping “Soon.” Developers are finally starting to get their shipping emails.
Android Pie brings several useful features to Android TV, but we haven’t seen many devices get the update. In September, SDMC showed off an Android Pie set-top box at the International Broadcasting Convention. In order for the platform to start moving forward with Android Pie, developers need to get their hands on it. We received an anonymous tip that confirmed Google has begun sending notices that the platform will begin shipping to developers in the next few weeks, and we’re seeing reports on Reddit as well.
Apparently, the email doesn’t look super official, but it is indeed from Google. The email asks the developer to confirm the request and provide their delivery address. We’re glad to see Google is finally getting around to sending out these developer kits. It has been a long time coming and hopefully, Android TV can see a lot more growth in 2019. It all starts with developers. Did you sign up for the ADT-2 developer kit?
