Your Netflix subscription may allow you to stream high-quality, HDR content, but streaming HDR video on your phone isn’t that easy. In this day and age, you don’t need a recent TV in order to be able to enjoy HDR content, as displays in most modern mobile devices are perfectly capable of HDR playback. While you might be able to watch HDR video on your phone using other apps, in order to do so with Netflix, your phone needs to be Widevine L1-compliant. What’s more, it needs to be manually whitelisted by Netflix. If you have a popular device such as the Samsung Galaxy S9 or the Samsung Galaxy Note 9, this is not a problem. But there is a handful of devices that are not as popular and therefore still need to be manually whitelisted in order to work with HDR on Netflix. The Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL were two such devices. At last, they have gotten HDR support for the streaming service.
Support for HDR streaming on Google’s latest phone lineup has not been officially announced anywhere at the moment. Nonetheless, users are reporting that HDR content is now becoming available on both the Pixel 3 and the Pixel 3 XL. Since the devices are being whitelisted on Netflix’s end, it’s a server-side update, meaning that it’s not necessary to update the app.
Now, before you go and try to binge-watch your favorite series in HDR with your Google Pixel phone, keep in mind that HDR support is slowly rolling out to Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL users worldwide. Since it seems to be server-side, however, it shouldn’t be long until all users receive the update. Make sure your current Netflix subscription allows you to watch HDR content. You should also be on the latest Android Pie build available for your device and, for good measure, the latest version of the Netflix app as well.
