Google Duo was launched alongside Allo back in 2016. While Allo focused on text communication, Duo was the video chat counterpart. Allo’s demise has been well documented, but Duo has actually been a sleeper success. The super-simple video chat app is available on several platforms already. Google is now planning to launch it on the web in the coming weeks as well.
According to sources at 9to5Google, Google is planning to launch a web client for Duo in the “coming weeks” Currently, Duo is available through the Play Store and iOS App Store. The app works on some Chromebooks, but a web client would open it up to many more devices. We can expect the web app to function similarly to Messages for web, which works on Chrome, Firefox, and other major browsers.
The report goes on to say they’re not sure how many of the mobile features will be available on the web, but “Knock Knock” and video messages will be present. It appears Duo will use a Google account for authentication rather than the QR code-based method that Messages uses, though that could change. As the report says, Google is planning to release this in the coming weeks. We’ll keep an eye on things until then. Do you use Google Duo?
