We’ve talked a lot about how Rich Communication Services (RCS) is a big part of Google’s new messaging plan. Today, the company is taking another step by rolling out RCS to Google Fi users. RCS messaging will be available on all phones designed for Google Fi (Pixel 3, Pixel 3 XL, LG G7 ThinQ, Moto G6, etc) and those compatible with the service, as announced last November. Google has also announced more 4G LTE coverage around the world.
RCS on Google Fi
RCS on Google Fi will work through the Messages app. If you have a phone designed for Fi, RCS will be automatically enabled. If not, you will need to download the Messages app and set it as the default messaging app. For this reason, iPhones are not compatible. Being a Google Fi customer and using the Messages app is just part of the equation. To really take advantage of all the RCS features (typing indicators, read receipts, high-resolution photos, etc), you will need to message someone who also has RCS support.

One important thing to note is that data used sending photos, GIFs, and videos over RCS will not be charged for Fi customers. You can take advantage of RCS’ high-resolution photo and video sharing without fear of running up your bill.
Keep in mind that this is a server-side rollout on a schedule, so not everyone will see the features right away. Google says to keep checking over the next few days. You can also enable/disable RCS by going to Settings > Advanced Features > Chat Features in the Messages app.

Enhanced International 4G LTE Coverage
The second part of Google’s announcement is upgraded coverage around the world. The 33 locations listed below will have their Google Fi coverage upgraded to 4G LTE over the next few weeks.
