Despite popular opinion saying otherwise, Wear OS is not dead. Smartwatches are becoming increasingly competitive, fragmenting the market and pushing consumers, at times, to competitors. Even still, Fossil aims to reclaim a little bit of that market, as they’ve announced both the Kate Spade Scallop Smartwatch 2 Collection and the Michael Kors Access Sofie at CES 2019. These designer smartwatches are powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 2100 rather than the newer Wear 3100, as they are aimed at those who have more of an affinity for fashion rather than tech. The Kate Spade Scallop smartwatches come in three colors with a choice of three straps, while the Michael Kors smartwatches come in four colors. Both smartwatches also feature mild water resistance.

The Kate Spade Scallop Smartwatch 2 collection is the original Kate Spade watch successor, and it features a number of improvements. For starters, heart rate detection is present and can be activated by tapping the spade. Also included is GPS that can be used for fitness purposes, along with NFC for payments. There’s also an app called “Choose your look” that’s baked into Wear OS, and it will allow you to modify the watch face to match what you’re wearing. It has a 300mAh battery and charges with a magnetic dock. It also has 4GB of storage, an ambient light sensor, and a microphone.
Kate Spade Scallop retails at $295 for the leather and polyurethane version, while it retails at $335 for the stainless steel metal bracelet version and it will be available in stores and online this month.

The Michael Kors line of smartwatches launched in 2017, but there hasn’t been a version with updated connectivity. The Michael Kors Access Sofie changes that, bringing in GPS for fitness tracking, NFC for mobile payments, and a heart rate sensor. Just like the Kate Spade watch, it has a 300mAh battery and charges with a magnetic dock. On top of that, it has 4GB of storage, an ambient light sensor, and a microphone as well. No pricing information has been revealed for this smartwatch, but it will launch in the summer of 2019.
