Adobe has finally released the first version of Photoshop for iPad. The update is available as a 30-day trial, and supports full PSD editing, layers, context-aware tools, advanced selection tools, retouching and cloud syncing.
Photoshop for iPad was announced last year when the 2018 iPad Pro was unveiled. The announcement said that the app will be released in 2019, and Adobe just hit their deadline this month. Although it is not fully featured, it provides a base for Adobe to build upon.
Along with its initial set of tools, Adobe has promised to bring the complete Photoshop engine to the iPad. The app supports multi-touch gestures like swipe, pinch and so on. It also takes full advantage of the fast processors in iPads, giving the best possible performance to users. The design is also native to iPad, with a context-aware user interface that only shows the right controls when they are needed, keeping the user interface minimalistic.

Create with full PSDs: Create on your iPad with the Photoshop features you know and love, from retouching and compositing to spot healing and blend modes. Layers? They’re all here. Resolution? No difference. Your PSDs are exactly the same, whether you’re working on your desktop or a mountain top.
Familiar tools, fingertip control: Work with your Layer stack and Toolbar tools just like you do on your desktop. Swipe, pinch, tap, scribble, slide — you’ll feel closer to your work than ever before. And with the context-aware UI, only the core tools and panes are displayed, so you can focus on your canvas, not the clutter.
Work anywhere: It’s simple to keep your PSDs in sync across devices because now you don’t have to. Your documents are automatically saved to Adobe’s cloud as you work and available on any device running Photoshop.
Compositing: Make precision selections with the Quick Selection tool, Lasso tool, and advanced selection options such as feathering. Use the paint brush to mask in and out certain parts of your image to create sophisticated composites.
Retouching: Edit and enhance images and remove unwanted elements with features such as spot healing and clone stamp.
For future updates, Adobe is working on improving the following tools:
- Brushes
- Masks
- Refining edges
- Selecting smart subjects
- Brushes and fonts sync with Creative Cloud
Will your iPad run Photoshop?
To use Photoshop, you must have one of the following iPad models, updated to iPadOS:
- iPad Pro (Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi and Cellular)
- iPad Pro (12.9-inch) and 2nd generation
- iPad Pro (10.5-inch)
- iPad Pro (9.7-inch)
- iPad 5th Generation
- iPad Mini 4
- iPad Air 2
Apple Pencil 1st generation and 2nd generation are also supported.
Strangely, Adobe does not mention the 6th generation iPad, 7th generation 10.2-inch iPad, 10.5-inch iPad Air, and 5th generation iPad mini.
