Galaxy S11 Tipped To Feature Breakthrough 108MP Camera Sensor

Korean tech giant Samsung announced that it's shutting down the CPU project at its Austin, Texas facility in the United States. This project is behind Samsung's custom-core development, so now, it's possible that we won't get to see any more iterations of the Mongoose cores after the M5 present on the Exynos 990. Today we've got an interesting nugget of information for the Galaxy S11's rear camera setup, courtesy of Ice_Universe. Take a look below for more details.

Galaxy S11 Might Feature Samsung's Custom 108MP Camera Sensor Believes Tipster

In August this year, Samsung announced the world's first 108MP camera sensor dubbed as the ISOCELL Bright HMX. This sensor has been developed through Samsung and Xiaomi's collaboration, and it's capable of capturing 0.8µm pixels and take in light through a 1/1.33-inch (9.6 x 7.2mm) opening. Additionally, the sensor is capable of squeezing these 108 million pixels into 27 million pixels through Samsung's Tetracell technology. This allows the ISOCELL Bright HMX to produce brighter images.

The sensor will make it on Xiaomi's Mi CC9 Pro when the device is launched tomorrow in China. Xiaomi's upcoming smartphone has five camera sensors on its back, and the CC9 Pro will demonstrate whether Samsung's ambitious 108MP camera sensor is ready for the market. Which will be crucial if Ice_Universe's report bears fruit.

Samsung's ISOCELL Bright HMX Sensor

According to the tipster, there's a "high probability" that Samsung will use a custom 108MP camera sensor for the Galaxy S11. Since the company already manufactures such a camera sensor, customizing this sensor for high-end smartphones shouldn't be a big deal. If Samsung does pull this off, then it'll become the first company to introduce said camera sensor on a flagship device. While Xiaomi's CC9 Pro has the makings of a premium gadget, it features Qualcomm's Snapdragon 730G as its processor - thus robbing the device of a flagship classification.

Additionally, while 108MP sounds impressive on paper, a smartphone will need serious hardware to use the data gathered by this sensor effectively. This doesn't appear to be a problem as Xiaomi has felt confident enough to launch the camera sensor on a device with an upper middle-tier Qualcomm processor.

Samsung's Galaxy S10 and S10 Plus became the center of controversy at the tail-end of this year when it was discovered that the smartphones' ultrasonic fingerprint sensor could be fooled by a gel screen protector. Since the devices are used to conduct financial transactions, this raised serious questions about Samsung's quality control processes. A 108MP camera sensor might make the market forget about this, and even put Cupertino tech giant Apple on the back foot. Apple's rumored to finally introduce 5G on the iPhone next year after the company missed the next-generation cellular network's debut in China last week.
