Xiaomi Working on Their Version of “Slofies”

Shortly after Xiaomi teased their version of the Apple Watch 5, it appears that the company is working on yet another Apple-inspired feature for their smartphones. The Chinese smartphone manufacturer is reportedly working on its own version of "Slowfies." This isn't the first time they've done something like this, and we've seen the same story unfold earlier this year when Xiaomi blatantly copied Apple's AR Emojis. In the case of "Slowfies," even Samsung rolled them for the Galaxy S10 via an earlier update.

Slow-motion image capture has been an integral part of every smartphone camera for the past few years. However, it was relegated only to the primary camera and made its way to the front-facing camera only with the Apple iPhone 11. A lot of modern-day front camera modules are powerful and more than capable of recording slow-motion video. It is anybody's guess as to why OEMs didn't think about this sooner.

In Xiaomi's case, the first hints of their version of "Slowfies" were discovered by an XDA Developers user who found several mentions of a new slow-motion mode in the MIUI camera app. It will record videos at a resolution of 1280 x 720p at 120fps. The user further states that there are several measures in place to ensure that it works only on certain handsets, presumably the high-end ones with compatible hardware.

We can expect Xiaomi's version of "Slowfies" to make its debut alongside the much-awaited Mi CC9 Pro, that will reportedly come with a 108MP primary camera. It is clear that the MiCC9 Pro is a camera-centric smartphone, so debuting another camera-centric feature alongside it makes sense. Xiaomi is yet to comment on this officially, so we may have to wait a while for additional details. The Mi CC9 Pro is launching in China on November 5, and globally on November 14, so we won't have to wait too long.
