Redditor Buys Intel Core i9-9900KS And Finds A 5.2GHz Overclock Easy To Achieve

The Intel Core i9-9900KS hasn't been a secret, we've known about it coming since Computex 2019 and recently were given the notice to expect it in October, well someone at a retailer didn't pay much attention to a street date and Redditor FR33_L35T3R had no trouble picking it up from the Czech shop for 589EUR, which includes taxes, and go to town on seeing what he could get out of it.

So quickly summing up the specifications, the Intel Core i9-9900KS will be the latest entry to the 9th Generation desktop lineup. Similar to the Core i9-9900K but being a special edition variant, it offers 5 GHz turbo frequencies across all 8 cores rather than 1 core on the Core i9-9900K. The CPU still has the same 8 cores, 16 threads along with 16 MB of L3 cache, a GT2 graphics chip and the same soldered IHS that we saw on the 9900K.  The TDP of the Core i9-9900KS is expected to be 127w for the base 4GHz clock speed.

FR33_L35T3R was able to get the i9-9900KS running on the ASUS ROG Maximus XI Hero, albeit with some weaker memory and has since ordered a better kit, but on to the information he's shared.  According to him his chip is fairly good and was cooled using a Noctua NH-D15 reaching a max temperature of 83°C and an average of 75°C while running Prime95 small FFTs staying around 5020MHz, this was at stock out of the box settings.  But, we're here for the overclocking results.

Cinebench R20

The Redditor set his overclock to 5200MHz with adaptive voltage set to 1.32v and the AVX offset of 5.  I personally prefer to keep the offset at 0 when validating an overclock but according to the screenshots shared FR33_L35T3R's Core i9-9900KS scored 5356 pts, in comparison my own i9-9900K with a 5.0GHz all core with 0 AVX offset scored 5233 pts.

Geekbench 5

You didn't think that Cinbench R20 was all he shared, did you? A little different from the run in Cinebench R20, FR33_L35T3R ran the Core i9-9900KS at 5100MHz with an AVX offset of 5 resulting in the scores seen below. I'm not very familiar with where this lands in the grand scheme of things as I don't tend to work with the Geekbench results, just like with UserBenchmark I find them to be wildly variable.

While this is only a small sample size of ONE, the stock performance is showing some promise with an all-core turbo breaking 5GHz with ease and seeing that the Noctua NH-D15 is able to tame it without any issue, overclocking headroom seems to be exceptionally limited at best.  While the voltages appear to be a bit better to achieve these clocks than with the Core i9-9900K it's not quite ground breaking.  At this point, we shouldn't have to wait much longer to see how the pricing and competitive nature of the Core i9-9900KS is in the market.
