KB4524147 That Promised to Fix Printing Issue Is Reportedly Breaking Start Menu

windows 10 1903 cumulative update bug microsoft

Microsoft released KB4524147 (Build 18362.388) to the latest Windows 10 May 2019 Update last week, aiming to address all the remaining minor bugs before getting ready for the public release of the upcoming version 1909. It now appears that the latest Windows 10 1903 cumulative update has also managed to bring some new bug with it. As a reminder, Microsoft had said that KB4524147 was a “required security update.”

It now appears that the new update that brought the fix for the printing issue, has introduced a new Start menu problem (via TD). Several users on Microsoft Forums and Reddit have reported seeing error message “Your Start menu isn’t working. We’ll try to fix it next time you sign in” with some receiving “critical error” message.

I’m running windows 10 home 1903.The latest cumulative update kills the start menu for me.

Clicking the start button opens up a window saying ” Critical error start menu not working,sign out …” somthing like that.

I tried reinstalling all windows store apps via powershell, restarted search service,restarted explorer process and everything

Only thing that fixes it is uninstalling the update.

On the same thread, a volunteer moderator suggests reinstalling Start menu:

Windows Key+X > Click Powershell (Admin) > Copy the below and paste into Powershell > Enter > Reboot your computer

Get-AppXPackage -Name Microsoft.Windows.ShellExperienceHost | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml”}

But, the above fix isn’t working for everyone as one user added on the thread that they continue to receive “Start menu is missing-with msg Critical error.”

Microsoft is yet to acknowledge the issue and the support notes still carry that the Windows maker isn’t aware of any known issues with Windows 10 cumulative update KB4524147. You can follow this guide to uninstall the latest cumulative update as a workaround.

Not the only Windows 10 1903 cumulative update issue

Along with the Start menu bug, some users have also complained that they are unable to install the new cumulative update on their devices, still facing the printing issue. Those who have managed to install the update and haven’t experienced the Start menu bug, on the other hand, are reporting that the Windows 10 1903 cumulative update hasn’t actually fixed the printing bug at all.

That said, there are several users who have confirmed updating their devices to the latest cumulative update without any issues. However, it cannot be ignored that the Windows maker has to get a grip over quality control and stop introducing new bugs every time a cumulative update is dropped bringing patches for previous bug.
