Instagram updates Stories Camera, adds Create mode and ‘On This Day’

Instagram Create

Instagram has released design updates for Stories camera in its app for iOS and Android. The company has also added a new Create mode for creating and sharing polls, countdowns and questions, along with a new 'On This Day' feature that allows users to re-share old content, posted on the same date in previous years. Visually, the camera feature looks a lot like Snapchat because the filters layout is very similar now.

Instagram has been on a roll lately with a number of updates. They released a new messaging app called Threads, which lets users communicate with their list of Close Friends and share status updates. An update for the Instagram app was also released, with support for iOS 13's dark mode. The company also got rid of the 'Following' feed from its app.

These new camera updates show the company's focus on enabling users to easily share more types of content, and not just images and videos. The placement and visibility of features, like interactive stickers, in Create mode underlines this new direction for Stories. Just like Facebook's similar feature, Instagram is also focusing on memories. The new 'On This Day' feature allows for easy re-sharing of content, effectively helping users post more #throwback content and get more conversations going.

Filters relocated

When you swipe right to access the Story camera, you will see a new layout now. Filters and image effects are more visible now, similar to how Snapchat shows them. It is also easier to access the on-device photo library to share content.

Create a Story

Amongst the options in camera, a new Create mode allows for sharing different types of content without using the camera. Even though interactive stickers can still be used after capturing a photo or video, Create allows using them without capturing content.

With Create, you can now produce a Story by adding text, a GIF background and place interactive stickers on top of it. The GIF background feature lets you search GIPHY and tile the GIF as a background for your Story.

You can swipe between the different options in Create to either use countdown, poll, vote or Q&A sticker. Tapping the dice will give you automated suggestions for inspiration. Tapping the capture button on any of these Create options takes you to the next screen to finalize your Story. No matter which Create mode you start with, you can always mix and match the stickers after capturing.

On This Day

If you had posted a photo or video on the same date last year, or the years before, Instagram will show it to you when you move to 'On This Day'. If you had posted multiple content over the years on that same date, you can tap the dice roll button to get a different suggestion from the app. This feature previously existed in Archives but has much better discoverability now.

With these new features and changes, Instagram seem poised to become a modern network where people can share all sorts of content. The company is treading very carefully on this path, taking inspiration from competitors like Snapchat, while staying away from what Facebook did in the past.
