Galaxy S11’s 5x Optical Zoom Sensor Reportedly Entering Final Testing Phase; Early Flagship Launch Rumored

5x Optical Zoom Camera for Galaxy S11 Rumored for a Final Test Run

A couple of months back, it was reported that Samsung has developed a 5x optical zoom camera module, which was made possible thanks to the reported acquisition of Corephotonics. Apparently, the unit has a really small footprint, which means it will not protrude, and the module will most likely make a debut with the Galaxy S11. According to a report fresh out of South Korea, Samsung all set to do final testing of the hardware before the shipment process starts.

Main Camera Could Include Samsung’s 108MP ISOCELL Bright HMX Sensor, a Massive Shift From the 12MP Units

According to a report from The Elec, the report claims that test sockets will be procured from MecaTech Systems for the final checking of the 5x optical zoom camera for the Galaxy S11. The manufacturer is the go-to company for many vendors for testing camera modules, and if the report is to be believed, it certainly looks as if Samsung is attempting to gain the upper hand in the competition by commencing final testing runs earlier than expected.

Like its Chinese rivals, Samsung is also tipped to use a periscope lens so that the 5x optical zoom camera doesn’t look noticeable on the Galaxy S11. The periscope-style zoom lens is said to be just 5mm thick and once the final tests are done, the components will presumably be shipped for assembly.

Samsung’s latest flagship, the Galaxy Note 10, features a 2x optical zoom, and thus the 5x optical zoom camera on the Galaxy S11 will be a massive upgrade. Other than that, some reports also claim that the phone will get the South Korean giant’s 108MP ISOCELL Bright HMX sensor, but we believe that’s unlikely to happen. Note 10’s largest sensor is the 16MP ultrawide one and it wouldn’t make sense for the company to make a direct jump to the 108MP unit. This is because the company has also made a 64MP sensor and apart from the mid-tier models belong to Samsung and other manufacturers, no high-end smartphone features them so far.

5x optical zoom is nothing new, as Huawei and OPPO have already introduced devices with the aforementioned zoom value. Thus, it makes sense for Samsung to play catch up. According to the tipster Ice Universe, the Galaxy S11’s camera will be a phenomenal upgrade. Also, it will be interesting to see if it will be able to outperform Apple’s iPhone 11 Pro.

We will presumably find out on February 18, which is the alleged launch date of the Galaxy S11 and its rumored 5x optical zoom camera.
