Future Sony Xperia Flagship Reportedly Getting Tested Using Qualcomm’s Next-Gen Snapdragon 865 & 5G

Snapdragon 865, 5G Reportedly Being Tested on Unnamed Sony Flagship

As we get closer and closer to the end of 2019, we’re bound to see a torrent of leaks and rumors surrounding Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 865. The Snapdragon 865 is expected to succeed the Snapdragon 855 Plus and Snapdragon 855, and it turns out according to the latest leak, the silicon is reportedly being tested on an unnamed Sony Xperia flagship. Let us hope the Japanese manufacturer aims to do more than offer customers just a routine SoC upgrade.

Sony’s Firmware Server Reveals Number SM8250, With a Possible 5G Variant Arriving for Select Markets

According to AndroPlus, files on what appears to be Sony’s distribution server were spotted with a familiar model number; ‘SM8250’. Known to a lot of our readers as the Snapdragon 865, the silicon is expected to be announced in December later this year. A previously published report suggests that Qualcomm may offer two variants of its next-generation chipset to its wide-range of partners. One version could be integrated with a 5G modem and will most likely be sold in select markets, with the device featuring the package possibly getting stamped with a higher price tag because of the embedded baseband chip.

The second variant could arrive without an integrated 5G modem, so it should cost less money for manufacturers and is expected to be sold in regions where 5G rollout isn’t expected for a few years. It’s currently unclear which device Sony intends on using the Snapdragon 865 in, but since this leak has shown up a little earlier, it’s possible the Japanese technology giant could be eyeing an earlier launch, possibly during the MWC 2020 trade show. The company has hoped that 5G connectivity will give it’s struggling smartphone division the much-needed boost, but it will take a few years for carriers worldwide to establish the necessary infrastructure needed for 5G support.

In terms of performance, an earlier benchmark of the Snapdragon 865 revealed it had gains in both the single-core and multi-core categories but continues to lag behind Apple’s A13 Bionic. Still, we’re not just going to rely on leaks prior to the Snapdragon 865’s official unveiling, but we do have a feeling that it’s going to be made on the more advanced 7nm EUV node. Since an earlier Snapdragon 875 manufacturing process rumor provided information about using TSMC’s 5nm process being used, it only makes sense for Qualcomm to opt for 7nm EUV for its upcoming announcement.

There’s still a lot of time remaining for the Snapdragon 865 to officially arrive and when it does, we’ll have all the core details prepared for our readers, so stay tuned.
