The first unboxing and benchmarks of the AMD Ryzen 5 3500X processor have been posted by the Chinese media. The processor which is AMD’s answer to the Core i5-9400F is expected to hit store shelves today, aiming the sub-$150 US market segment.
AMD Ryzen 5 3500X 6 Core CPU Unboxed and Benchmarked in China – Tests Reveal Faster Than The Intel Core i5-9400F
AMD is preparing two variants for the sub-$150 US market, the Ryzen 5 3500X & the Ryzen 5 3500. Both processors feature 6 cores and 6 threads which means that there won’t be multi-threading support on either chip, however, given their price point and the market they are aiming, a cut-down core configuration is expected. As such, these would be the first Ryzen 3000 parts with no multi-threading support.
Since the AMD Ryzen 5 3500X would be the first to hit the market, it’s unboxing and benchmark embargo lifts earlier. The AMD Ryzen 5 3500X boasts a base clock of 3.6 GHz and a boost clock of 4.1 GHz. The processor features 32 MB of cache, a 65W TDP and a price close to $150 US. It is highly liked that AMD would choose a $149.99 US price for this specific chip.
The chip comes with 24 PCIe Gen 4 lanes, support for 3200 MHz memory and we also get to take a look at some performance benchmarks where the chip is highly competitive versus the Core i5-9400F. The 32 MB Game Cache is also said to deliver much better latencies in a wide variety of esports titles so that is something to consider for gamers on a budget when having to select between an AM4 and the LGA 1151 platforms.

AMD Ryzen 5 3500X Performance Benchmarks
The processor was tested on an MSI B450M Mortar Max motherboard along with 16 GB of DDR4 memory running at 3000 MHz and a GeForce GTX 1660 6 GB graphics card. When comparing CPU specific tests such as CPU-Z, the AMD Ryzen 5 3500X scored 476.3 points in the single-core test compared to 451.4 points for the Core i5-9400F. In the multi-thread test, AMD Ryzen 5 3500X score 2774.9 points compared to Intel’s 2568.2 points. You can see multiple validations of the Ryzen 5 3500X along with its CPU-z score here and here.
The processor also scored higher than the Core i5 9400F in the productivity benchmarks which shows that this chip would be great for PC builders on a budget.
As for gaming performance, multiple titles were tested at 1080p resolution. In PUBG, the chip was averaging around 80 FPS. In Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, the chip scored an average of 65 FPS with a min of 27 FPS and a max of 141 FPS. In Shadow of The Tomb Raider, the chip scored 77 FPS on avg. In World War Z, the chip scored 126 FPS on average with 171 max and 109 min FPS. Finally, in LOL (Leauge of Legends), the chip scored an average of 180 FPS and a max FPS of 222.
This is some respectable performance in my opinion for a chip that should cost around $150 US. The chip also consumers 8.3W on idle but no load power consumption numbers were provided and neither the temperatures.
As for the package, the Ryzen 5 3500X comes in the standard cardboard box which includes the CPU inside the plastic cover alongside the ‘RYZEN’ case badge. The box also contains the warranty and the Wraith Stealth cooler. Overall, the processor and its cheaper sibling, the R5 3500 are set to capture the interest of budget gamers, especially since AMD is targetting them towards the esports gaming market.
